Applying to National University of Singapore (Part 1)

Hey!! Here comes the guide on applying to National University of Singapore, or NUS in short!

PS: It’s the uni that I am currently studying now.

Here is part 1: application. Means there’s part 2 like accepting the application, applying for hostels etc which I will update later XD

Okay again, I will just be very straightforward here. I am not going to introduce how NUS is so good etc, all these stuffs you can google it yourself.🙂

  1. I will be using STPM results as an example. For A-levels, or other Pre-U qualification, this guide will help too, there’s not much difference on procedures of applying (I think).
  2. This is only applicable for Malaysian students (Sorry, for other countries, they will have a different method of applying)
  3. This is solely based on my experience, and this is accurate as in year 2016.

Before you apply, have a clear mind on what course do you plan to study. You can go to their website to check in details, on the overseas exchange opportunities, future career pathway, and curriculum structure.

PS: NUS Website is more organized 🙂

Make sure that at least you meet their minimum requirements to apply.

There are a few things people will be confused here:

Why my results so good (showing a string of As) but still cannot get into NUS??

LOL, this always happens every year, you may have good results but this doesn’t guarantee you a place in NTU. There are TONS of cases where applicants are accepted by more reputable universities like Harvard, Oxford but got rejected by NUS. So don’t feel disheartened!

Should I email the documents or mail the physical copy of my results?

Just follow the prompt. You will need to remember your application number, and name all the documents with your application number in it. Then zip all the files to be uploaded.

PS: This will be more confusing as compared to NTU uploading facility.

What CCAs/Extra achievements should I put in? Is not participating International Olympiad Competitions will not be given advantage?

Yes, it’s true that if you took part in Olympiad competitions, you stand a really higher chance to get in. But do not panic! You still stand a chance. Just put CCAs that you think is significant and outstanding to your application as compared to the other applicants.

NUS or NTU??

LOL. I can’t really answer this question. It’s all depends on you. What you want to achieve, what’s your expectations of a uni life etc.

I am here to clarify one of the rumours that had been spreading and went viral over the past years:

If you get offer from NUS, then you can’t get offer from NTU at the same time, and vice versa.

Honestly, this is proven NOT TRUE. In 2016, I got offers from both NTU and NUS. 🙂 And a few seniors got offers from both unis actually. NUS and NTU handle their student intakes respectively, they are not linked to each other.

Here are some screenshots of how the online application looks like:

Make sure you make the right choice here because the application interface will be different with different pre-u qualifications. For my case, I chose STPM.

There are 11 sections to be filled up. Don’t worry you can fill up any sections first, instead of follow it accordingly like in NTU application form. Just take note of the time limit though, because it will not save your application data once the time limit is up. Personally I will look through what they want, and figure out what should I fill in.

As usual, fill in as prompted.

For ‘English’ Part, just put your grades that you obtained and the maximum grade possible is A+.

Fill in as prompted. See why you need to select your Pre-U qualification wisely? You can’t change that during your application.

Unlike NTU, NUS want score instead of band for IELTS/TOEFL.

Don’t be panic when they ask for Contact person! It’s optional to fill in that, means you don’t need to provide info on these.

Okay, here comes the personal statement part. Unlike NTU which prefer sweet and simple method, NUS want more details on yourself. So take your time to decide what you want to describe about your qualities and abilities. You can actually show off emphasize your CCA achievements that you didn’t list in your application and why you are worthy to be NUS student.

PS: Actually a lot of people gave up in this part. I was kinda frustrated too, but in the end I just did my best and wrote it in the last minute though.

Again, rank your preferences wisely. It’s not compulsory to fill in all the 5 choices too.

If you are interested in double degree programme, you can indicate it here.

Again, you need to set your password. But NUS limit to 8 alphanumeric characters only. Please take note of that as you need it later for uploading documents and checking your application status.

You need to pay application fee first before submitting documents.

And you are actually automatically considered for any financial aids/scholarships for your studies at NUS. Means no separate application is needed! 😀

Yay here’s the end of the application form!

So here’s the difference between NUS and NTU online application system.

    1. Application number will be given to you when you submit your application. On the next page when you are given that number, you will then require to create your own PIN so that you can use that to upload documents and check application status etc. Do note that SGD20 is necessary to complete the application. All the best!
